Terschelling: Final Part

This is my last series of photos from Terschelling. I am already back to the continent for some days and very much delayed with my posts about the island. I had a great time there but wouldn't visit it during winter. People use to say the North Sea wind can be aggressive and unbearable and probably rains there even more there than in continental Holland.

E aqui acaba minha série de fotos sobre a ilha de Terschelling. Já voltei pro continente há dias, mas precisava desovar umas fotos por aqui. Adorei a ilha mas jamais voltaria lá fora do período de verão. Dizem que o Mar do Norte tem um vento agressivo, glacial e insuportável durante o inverno e provavelmente chove mais lá do que no resto do país. Já peguei no fim do ano passado uma pneumonia por causa de um ventinho bobo em Amsterdam = uma chuvinha. Inverno em ilha então = tô fora, me inclui fora dessa !

Pretty place, always packed. It took me a long time to be able to make a picture of this place - without the customers. I wanted to make a picture that could be featured in magazine about restaurants and bars. The others side of the place was impossible to photograph: all the clients had to go there under my command in order to make the picture above. Things were starting to get tense between me and the place owners with clients being moved by me to left and right . Forget it, humpf !

Esse bar é uma gracinha, sempre cheio de gente que procura sanduíches de peixe (arenque), mexilhão, camarão e peixes defumados e fritos. Me custou um tempão pra fazer a foto acima sem clientes. Eu queria fazer uma foto que tivesse o estilo de uma página de revista sobre restaurantes e bares, já que o lugar é um charme. O outro lado do bar era impossível de fotografar pois os clientes tinham ido pra lá para eu fazer a foto acima e depois não queriam voltar para o lugar prévio. O negocio já tava começando a ficar tenso entre eu e os donos do lugar já que eu estava perturbando as pessoas a sempre saírem dos seus lugares. Artistas são tão incompreeendidos, humpf !

When in a Dutch island in the North Sea you must eat deep fried cod for a quick lunch. They generally serve it with a mayonnaise garlic sauce and it is delicious.

Quando em uma ilha holandesa no Mar do Norte você não pode deixar de experimentar bacalhau frito servido com molho de maionese ervas e alho.

Terschelling has a huge offer of hotels, pensions, campings, places for caravans. Prices for all pockets. We always reach the island with a ferry boat (the travel takes two hours) and return to the continent with a fast boat (45min.). You can move around with bikes wich can be rented downtown, and all the bars, cafes and restaurants have a lot of varied offers. Cranberry juice is a must drink - try fish and seafood as well.

Nearby a bunker (see photo below), we have spotted this tile. Similar stones with a sailor and a dog pictured on them could be found in other parts of the island. I have no idea of the story behind or special meaning. Does anyone know ?

Perto de um bunquer utilizado na Segunda Guerra (veja foto abaixo) vimos essa placa de pedra com o desenho de um marinheiro e seu cachorro. Vimos de novo tais placas em outras partes da ilha. Alguém sabe aí o significado oculto dessa figuras impressas em pedras ?

We visited with the kids an aquarium museum. It is not a large aquarium at all, but it is worth a visit if you are with children. There are lots of rooms and corridors with displays and texts about the geology of the island, skeletons, endangered species,shells maps... very educative and really fun !

Visitamos o aquário local com as crianças. Não há muitas espécies no aquário, mas vale a pena uma visitinha se você está com crianças. Há varias salas e corredores com muitas maquetes e displays contando a formação geológicada ilha, os efeitos do vento, esqueletos de peixes, conchas, mapas... super divertido e educativo!

My yummy souveniers: cranberry siroop for the kids, cranberry sauce for huby's barbecues and a mosterd-dille sauce for my salads and fish. All bio and without crazy codes starting with E letters followed by 3digit numbers. Argh !

Suvenires alimentícios: xarope concentrado de mirtilo pra fazer refrescos para as crianças, molho de mirtilo para os churrascos do marido e molhos de mostarda com dil para saladas e peixe. Tudo bio e sem aqueles conservantes malucos cujos códigos começam com a letra E seguida de três números, ui !
I also got more shells for my never ending collection. They come mostly from the North Sea, the coast of Brazil and the Mediterranean Sea. My husband is starting to feel upset about it. I love shells of all forms - However, I never buy corals.

E em Terschelling eu consegui achar conchas novas pra minha coleção. Elas vem basicamente do Atlântico Norte, da costa do Brasil e do Mar Mediterrâneo. Marido já tá de saco cheio. Adoro encontrar sempre uma concha mais diferente que a ultima aquisição - mas eu jamais never compro corais.
