Orange Madness (Oranje gekte)

"The Dutch national expressions of joy limited to the waving of the Dutch flag and orange banners while singing Hup, Holland, hup and the Wilhelmus. (...) Many times the gatherings of hundreds of Dutch fans abroad during football matches have not cause an impression". (NRC. 28 May 1934).
According to a research, there is a positive relation between the total of children living in a certain area and the chances that the streets will be adorned in orange. The opposite is valid for areas with old people.

The Dutch football team played in 1907 for the first time in orange shirts.

Historian Herman Pleij classifies de orange madness as "compensational nationalism", because after World War II expressions and symbols of nationalism had acquired a bad reputation.

The Stomach Intestins and Liver Foundation sells orange toilet paper. Those who donate at least 15 euros receive a package home with three toilet paper rolls. The Foundation aims with that action to stimulate people regularly observing their s***.
