Gasterij Zondag, Garderen, the Hoge Veluwe

In the Veluwe you find many parks and attractions such as the Paleis Het Loo, Kroller Muller Museum, Burgers Zoo, Juliana Toren, Jan Soldaat, Midget Golf Terra Nova Putten... After visiting the Apenheul the whole family gathered together to enjoy the last rays of sun at the terrace of Gasterij Zondag in Garderen.

First, we changed some impressions about the Apenheul and ordered some warm drinks and glasses of Porto while outside - and some bread. I have noticed more and more that bars, restaurants and cafes are serving bread and appetizers in these paper cones placed in a rack- which are traditionally used in Holland for serving French fries ("patat").

For the kids: Dutch pancakes.

Above: the starter for my in-laws. They considered it bland ("...een beetje flauw."). I had a menu at 23,50 euros with a fish soup as starter. It was very correct, very yummy and I didn't have "to correct it" adding more salt, pepper... Just a drizzle of olive oil and perfect. Ummm, no bread was served despite the olive oil on the table. Well, without having to wait much my soup was followed by cod with sauce, very delish. There were other menus at 27,50 euros with, for exemple, a bouillon, a rendeer dish and a dessert.

The side dish was cooked veggies, pretty correct - not overcooked like many Dutch like it. It was s suprise because most restaurants in Holland serve French fries and a salad as side dishes.

The rest of the family opted for deer (below).

Below: in laws ordered this amazing pear pie with ice cream and vanilla sauce.

For me (tmenu at 23,50 euros) the "dessert du chef"  was a combi of brownie, ice-cream, pear, mousse and a stick of chocolate.

Gasterij Zondag is very handy after you have visited some of the attractions on the Veluwe. It has a restaurant, a brasserie and a conservatory - where groups can enjoy receptions, barbecues, high tea, a warm and a cold buffet - and is open from 10 am.
