Greetings from Rio # 4: Gilson Martins

El Hombre Bolso / L' Homme Sac / L'Uomo Borsa / The Bag Man
Mad about bags and Rio icons ? You cannot miss this shop.

"Gilson Martins represents Rio de Janeiro culture in the design of his bags with images of Sugar Loaf mountain, Christ the Redemeer, Coapacabana and Lapa (downtwon Rio). The first designer to use the Brazilian flag in fashion, Gilson is listed in top travel guides including Michelin, Lonely Planet and The New York Times. The shops in Rio (...) are a leading example of Brazilian design, with a sense of humour and quality. Gilson's bags were on display in Paris at the Louvre and Galleries Lafayette, and were shown at the Cannes Film Festival, the 2006 world Cup in Berlin and during Design Week in Milan. In 2009, Gilson's bags were chosen to go on sale at e MoMA shop, in New York. Gilson is revolutionary in the contemporary design of re-cycling left over material from the bags and generating work for poor communities." (excerpt from folder Take Rio with You ! received graciously at one of Gilson Martins' stores)

I have bought this passport wallet. It holds easily two or more passports. Gee, I regret I haven't purchased a trolley for my travels !

Rua Visconde de Piraja 462 B - Ipanema
Rua Figueiredo Magalhaes 304 A - Copacabana

And just some steps outside Gilson's shop there is this work of art. Gilson's project for the Cow Parade stayed permanently on the sidewalk. I have seen only one CowParade in my life, many years ago in Luxembourg. Some works were so amazing that I have always wondered why not preserve them forever on the streets.

Monica and Mariangela also love the cow !
