Greetings from Rio # 7 : Botequins

Above: is my friend Cecilia going for some deep fried cod "bolinhos" or dried meat balls ?
Mmm, pretty ring Ceci...

The French go to a bistrot. Spaniards visit regularly a tapas bar for some socialization. The Dutch cannot get enough of their brown cafes (bruinecafes / kroeg). English visit a pub. And Brazilians have their botequin. Or "boteco" for short. There are several sorts of them. Basically it is a place where you can buy beer or soft drinks, cigarrettes, snacks... There are some small tables and chairs. And they can range from dirty-cheap-depressive spot for losers to cool and sophisticated spot for well stuffed pockets. Maybe there is a TV where you can watch your favourite soap opera or a soccer match accompanied of beer and some deep fried snacks....

You can exchange some impressions about the news, weather, politics, disappointments in love and inflation with total strangers...

You can even have a decent meal for a fair price. You can pass by to have a fresh squeezed juice after the beach or just look for some flirt while sipping a caipirinha or fueling your spirit with some Brahma beer - always !. Try also some pastel or deep fried cod fish balls with chopp before you go dancing. Or manioc with shrimps and a Bohemia beer. Or filet pieces in Madeira sauce. Or garlic bread and black beans soup with cachaça. Ahhh !
